Set up Slack
Pick a message in Slack, choose Sort into Pragma from its shortcut menu, and Pragma reads that one message the way it reads an email you forwarded: it works out what the message asks for and proposes the items, links and transitions that answer it. The suggestions come back as a private card in the same channel, and you answer them there.
Pragma does not read your channels. The app asks for no history scope at all — the only message it ever sees is the one you point it at.
Two steps, with two different owners:
- An organization owner installs the app in the Slack workspace. Once.
- Each member claims their own Slack account. Once each, and it is what lets them press Apply.
1. Install the app (organization owner)
In Pragma, go to Settings → Chat apps.
Under Where Pragma is installed, press Install in Slack.
Slack shows its consent screen. Check what it asks for — it should be exactly three bot scopes:
Scope What it is for commandsthe Sort into Pragma shortcut and the /pragmacommandchat:writeposting the private card back to you users:readnaming the author of the message you captured No history scope is requested.
channels:history, groups:historyandim:historyare what "this app reads your channels" would look like on that screen, and they are absent.Approve. You land back on a Pragma page, and the workspace appears in the installations table with who installed it and when.
Start the install from Pragma, not from Slack. An install begun on Slack's side arrives with nothing that says which Pragma organization the workspace belongs to, and is refused.
The installations section is shown to the organization owner only — an installation holds the credential Pragma acts with inside your workspace.
2. Claim your Slack account (every member)
Anyone in the workspace can capture a message, but Pragma applies nothing until it can name the person who pressed. In Settings → Chat apps, under Your chat accounts, pick either way in:
Sign in with Slack — one press. Slack asks for openid and profile; your email address is deliberately not requested.
Use a code in Slack instead — Pragma shows an eight-character code. In Slack, type:
/pragma link ABCD2345The code is single-use and lasts ten minutes. Use this when you are already in Slack, or when the sign-in flow is blocked for you.
Either way, the claimed account appears in the table with the name Slack gave it, and you can remove it there at any time.
Sorting a message
- Hover the message → the ••• menu → Sort into Pragma. If your workspace has many apps, it may sit under More message shortcuts….
- Pragma answers "Pragma is reading this message…" in a message only you can see.
- A card replaces it with up to five suggestions, each with Apply and Dismiss, plus Open in Pragma for the full set — the reasons, the flags and the drafts a card cannot carry.
Applying runs under your Pragma account: your permissions, your name in the history. Not the account of whoever installed the app.
Sorting normally takes seconds. Pragma waits up to two minutes for it to settle before giving up on showing you a card; the message is captured either way and is in Emails to review.
The Pragma tab in Slack
Open Pragma in Slack's sidebar (the App Home tab) to see the suggestions still waiting for you — from a Slack message, an email, a meeting recording, any channel. It lists up to ten, with an Open button each, and counts the messages still being sorted. A message whose suggestions are all answered drops off the tab.
When something is refused
Every one of these is said privately, to you only, and nothing is captured.
| What Slack tells you | What to do |
|---|---|
| Pragma is not connected to this workspace | An organization owner runs step 1. |
| Link your Slack account to Pragma first | Run step 2. |
| Your Pragma account is linked, but it is not a member of the organization this workspace belongs to | Ask an administrator in that organization to invite you. |
| Pragma could not tell who wrote that message | Pragma refuses to file a message under the wrong sender. Nothing was captured. |
| A colleague already sent this message to Pragma | The message is theirs to sort. Ask them, or point at a different one. |
| This organization's Pragma plan does not include sorting messages | See getting access. |
| That code did not work | Codes last ten minutes and work once. Get a fresh one from Settings → Chat apps. |
Removing it
- Your own account: Settings → Chat apps → Remove on the row. You will be asked to link again the next time you press a button in Slack.
- The workspace: Settings → Chat apps → Remove on the installation. The credential is dropped; everything already captured is untouched. The row stays, marked Removed, so it is possible to tell a removed installation from one that never existed.
- Uninstalling Pragma from Slack's side does the same thing without anyone opening Pragma: Slack tells Pragma the app is gone, and the installation is revoked.
